The Industrial Style:
Raw, Honest & Timeless

Concrete, steel and recycled wood - discover how industrial design creates a powerful and authentic interior that never ages.

By the Movio team - April 2026 - 8 min read

The industrial style - also industrial design or loft-style called - takes its inspiration from the factory buildings and warehouses of the early 20th century. Rough brick walls, exposed pipes, steel beams and aged wood: what was once functional is now celebrated as aesthetics.

At Movio we offer a selection of industrial furniture that bring the raw beauty of this design into any interior - whether you live in a real loft or in an ordinary Belgian row house.

What is the industrial style?

The industrial interior decoration originated when artists in the 1970s-1980s transformed abandoned factories in New York and London into living spaces. They retained the raw, unfinished elements - high ceilings, brick walls, steel pipes - and turned them into an aesthetic. Today, this is the foundation of what we know as the loft style.

« Industrial design hides nothing. It celebrates structure, matter, the honesty of building. »

The characteristic of the industrial living room or bedroom is the combination of contrasting materials: cold steel next to warm wood, raw concrete next to soft leather. That tension is exactly what makes the style so powerful and timeless.

The essentials of industrial furniture

Industrial furniture are recognizable by their combined use of metal and wood, their heavy proportions and their finished roughness. A few iconic pieces define each room.

How do you integrate the industrial style at home?

The industrial style seems intense, but is surprisingly flexible. Here are the most frequently asked questions from our clients.

// Frequently Asked Questions
The key is balance between dark and light. Use the dark color palette (anthracite, black, rust) as accents and choose lighter neutral tones (light gray, cream, natural wood) as the dominant color for large areas such as walls and floors. Add Edison bulbs or spot lighting in brass for warm, layered light. Check out our lighting tips for industrial interiors at Movio.
The classic choice is cast concrete or concrete-look floor tiles - seamless, cool and raw. Alternatives are dark stained parquet (oak in anthracite or wenge) for more warmth, or vintage tiles with an aged pattern. Avoid shiny or decorative floors - industrial design calls for honest, matte surfaces. Always pair with a large dark rug to soften the space.
Yes, but with a lighter approach. In small spaces choose one or two industrial statement pieces (a metal lamp, a steel bookshelf) on a light background. Use open furniture - open shelves, see-through chairs - to visually open up the space. Mirrors in steel frames double the effect. Discover our compact industrial furniture at Movio.
Absolutely. The most successful combinations are Industrial + Scandinavian (Light wood and white walls as the base, steel accents), Industrial + Bohemian (raw textures softened with rugs, plants and textiles) and Industrial + Modern (clean lines, concrete and steel with clean white volumes). The metal element is always the connecting link. View our mixed-style interiors at Movio.
Choose objects with a functional or artisanal appearance: vintage clocks with visible movement, cast iron dishes, old factory lamps converted into desk lamps, glass bottles as vases, wooden boxes as storage. Avoid overly decorative or fragile objects - industrial design honors the sturdy and the solid. Discover our industrial decoration collection at Movio.

Sustainability: industrial design and reuse

The industrial style and durability are closely linked. The use of recycled scaffolding wood, reclaimed steel and vintage objects makes this design inherently circular. An industrial piece of furniture that lasts for decades and becomes more beautiful with time is inherently more sustainable than one that is discarded after five years.

According to Wikipedia on upcycling reusing and upgrading materials is one of the most efficient ways to reduce the environmental impact of production. This is exactly the philosophy behind the best industrial furniture design.

Trends 2025-2026: the new industrial design

The industrial interior is evolving into a warmer, more refined version of itself. Less crude, more curative - but without losing the essence:

  • Warm industrial: anthracite combined with honey, ochre and terracotta
  • Curved steel shapes in furniture - less angular, more organic
  • Black steel + natural marble as the dominant material pair
  • Vintage factory lamps in brass or bronze instead of black
  • Handmade pottery as a contrast to the hard steel
  • Green as a color accent - plants and moss walls in raw loft contexts

« An industrial interior does not lie. It shows what it is - and that is exactly its strength. »
